Neural pathways of olfactory kin imprinting and kin recognition in zebrafish

چکیده

Abstract Teleost fish exhibit extraordinary cognitive skills that are comparable to those of mammals and birds. Kin recognition based on olfactory visual imprinting requires neuronal circuits were assumed be necessarily dependent the interaction mammalian amygdala, hippocampus, isocortex, latter being a structure teleost lacking. We show teleosts—beyond having hippocampus pallial amygdala homolog—also have subpallial amygdalar structures. In particular, we identify medial neural central related kin corresponding an accessory system despite absence separate vomeronasal organ.

Kin recognition in zebrafish: a 24-hour window for olfactory imprinting.

Distinguishing kin from non-kin profoundly impacts the evolution of social behaviour. Individuals able to assess the genetic relatedness of conspecifics can preferentially allocate resources towards related individuals and avoid inbreeding. We have addressed the question of how animals acquire the ability to recognize kin by studying the development of olfactory kin preference in zebrafish (Dan...

Olfactory kin recognition in a songbird.

The ability to recognize close relatives in order to cooperate or to avoid inbreeding is widespread across all taxa. One accepted mechanism for kin recognition in birds is associative learning of visual or acoustic cues. However, how could individuals ever learn to recognize unfamiliar kin? Here, we provide the first evidence for a novel mechanism of kin recognition in birds. Zebra finch (Taeni...

Crypt cells are involved in kin recognition in larval zebrafish

Zebrafish larvae imprint on visual and olfactory kin cues at day 5 and 6 postfertilization, respectively, resulting in kin recognition later in life. Exposure to non-kin cues prevents imprinting and kin recognition. Imprinting depends on MHC class II related signals and only larvae sharing MHC class II alleles can imprint on each other. Here, we analyzed which type of olfactory sensory neuron (...

Kin recognition in rattlesnakes.

Snakes are often regarded as the least social of all vertebrate groups, but this assumption stems from the fact that they are secretive and difficult to observe in nature, rather than direct evidence. Recent studies have revealed a surprising degree of social complexity in snakes. Here, I examine the ability of captive-raised timber rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus) to recognize siblings by meas...
